Class Description:
This beginner sampler quilt course has been designed especially for those who can use a sewing machine but have limited or no experience of patchwork and quilting and want to learn more. We will guide you and take you through the basics of patchwork and quilting by making this Beginners Sampler Quilt.
 
During this patchwork and quilting course, we will cover all the basic skills you will need, including using a rotary cutter and mat, how to cut fabrics and sew your blocks together (known as piecing) with accuracy using a sewing machine, how to quilt all three layers (the front, batting and back) together using a method called ‘quilt as you go’. This method will allow you to work with smaller, more manageable pieces, perfect for home sewing machines. Then we’ll show you how to neaten and bind the edges of your finished quilt.
 
During each class we will teach you different skills and techniques. You will need to use these to work on your quilt at home in between sessions at the shop to stay on top of your sampler quilt.
 
Completing this course will give you the skills and confidence you need to tackle more complicated projects going forward. Our Beginner’s Sampler Quilt will measure approx. 51" x 51" square when finished.
 
Please bring with you:
You will need five 100% cotton coordinating fabrics in a mixture of dark, medium and light tones, as well as a background fabric that coordinates with your chosen fabrics. If you would like help with choosing just pop in and see us in the shop.
 
- 0.5m - Colour 1 (shown as yellow in the picture)
- 0.75m - Colour 2 (shown as light blue in the picture)
- 0.5m - Colour 3 (shown as dark blue in the picture)
- 0.5m - Colour 4 (shown as pink in the picture)
- 0.75m - Colour 5 (shown as lilac in the picture)
- 2m of background fabric (white in the picture)
- 0.5m of Bondaweb (fusible web)
- 1 reel of 100% cotton thread in either white, cream or grey (60 or 50wt)
- Basic sewing kit of pins, fabric scissors, unpicker, needles, thimble if you wear one and your glasses if you need them.
 
You will also need fabric for the back of your quilt and Batting, but we will talk about this in week one.
